You might know her best as the lead singer of the American new wave band, The B-52s, but Kate Pierson is also the frontwoman of the California Airstream retreat called Kate's Lazy Desert. Turn up "Rock lobster" on your record player and get ready to tour quite possibly the most psychedelic Airstream hotel of this planet.
The Lazy Desert is located in Landers, California and is the home of six vintage Airstreams with names like "Tinkerbell", "Tiki", "Hairstream", and "Hot Lava". Each RV has been designed with an equally outlandish theme so you can spend your California vacation in a Mid-century tiki bar, a B-52s time capsule, or a space-age lounge.
One Airstream is named "North to Alaska" and, along with the others, is available to rent through Airbnb. Kate describes her quirky retreat as "a kitschy novelty perfect for the more adventurous vacationer!" She incorporates each Airstream's personal history into the designs. Because the previous owners of this green-striped Airstream had spent their time traveling across the country to Alaska, the interior is filled with vibrant colors and Pacific Native American art.
Just like the nearby Palm Springs, Kate's Lazy Desert is characterized by its use of midcentury modern design. The vivid colors and wood surfaces of this living area will make you feel like you are in the atomic age.
The Airstream has an open layout allowing plenty of natural light to fill the space. The light shining through the curtains casts wonderful multicolored reflections on the polished wood surfaces.
You'll find a kitchenette in the middle of the Airstream and a beautiful wall painting referencing the Alaskan wilderness.
In the bedroom, you will find one of many examples of the Native American art made by the artist Michael Lee Scott.
You'll find tikis and hula girls hiding throughout the RV like they are in this bright bathroom.
When the desert heat gets to be a bit too much, hop in the Lazy Desert's swimming pool. With temperatures soaring over 100 degrees, it is necessary to stay hydrated.
Of course, no love shack is complete without a front patio for taking in those California skies.
